This morning, Kevin Durant officially declined his $31.5 million player option to remain with the Golden State Warriors, thus officially becoming an unrestricted free agent. He could still return to the Warriors on a new deal that would trump all others financially; in fact, ESPN’s panel of NBA experts consider that the likeliest scenario. But don’t count out the New York Knicks or Brooklyn Nets, and the L.A. Clippers could be a darkhorse contender for his services. Whoever signs Durant will have to pay him upwards of $40 million to sit out next season as he rehabs a torn Achilles suffered during the NBA Finals. Free agency officially gets underway this  Sunday.
