SAN FRANCISCO – MARCH 07: Passengers get off of a San Francisco MUNI bus March 7, 2007 in San Francisco, California. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has asked the San Francisco Municipal Railway to conduct a study on offering free fares on all city transit, including buses, streetcars and cable cars, a move that would be the first of its kind in the nation. Starting Monday March 30th, SFMTA will be having changes to their services. Light rail routes J, KT, L, M, and N will be temporarily be replaced by bus shuttles. And the only Muni Metro stations that will remain open will be the downtown stations.
On a positive note, closing down the rail system will allow Muni to do important maintenance work for their vehicles and infrastructure.
