With more free time at home right now, let’s use our time wisely and stay on top of the latest in music. This week we’ve got a superstar collaboration of Olympic proportions, 88Rising’s latest rising star and an old song that is new again thanks to the HBO show Westworld.
Let’s start with SAM SMITH feat. DEMI LOVATO “I’m Ready” As solo artists, few current artists can sing about love as a basic, human need as emotionally as Sam and Demi can. Sam has brought us to our knees on songs like “I’m Not The Only One,” “Stay With Me” and his recent single “To Die For.” Demi is capable of melting your face off when she effortlessly unleashes her voice at full power. They’ve got all of that working with this track and together they soar to the highest heights with an uplifting, empowerment song they hope will make you smile. What made me smile was the video! Check out Sam and Demi performing this song while competing in their own “queer Olympics.” Has there ever been a music video featuring wrestling in platform heels? Sprint events wearing stilettos and glitter? Diving in corsets? This one does and it’s a must see!
88 Rising has a full roster of artists representing Asian culture and one artist on that label is elevating his game to an even higher level. With a global social media following and an increasing mainstream fanbase, JOJI is a Japanese singer, songwriter, rapper and former YouTube comedian with a new single “Gimme Love” that will continue that upward trajectory. “Gimme Love” sounds like two songs in one with a fast-paced, frenetic start flowing seamlessly into an atmospheric chill track with airy vocals. The video takes inspiration from The Office but with a bloodier storyline and results in Joji hijacking a rocket. Intrigued? See it here! Joji’s new album “Nectar” will drop on July 10th.
The closing credits usually don’t keep everyone’s attention once your favorite show has wrapped up an episode. But this week, the music playing at the end of episode 5 of Westworld grabbed a lot of your attention. The song is “Emerge” by now defunct electro-clash duo FISCHERSPOONER. Originally released in 2001 independently and then again in 2003 on the band’s major record label debut album “#1” the song started to gain on the list of most Shazam-ed tracks not only in the Bay Area but across the US. Today, it’s at the top of that list and continues to trend on social media. If you like a full range of synth sounds from deep to shrill mixed with rapid fire beats and vocals that border on primal screams, then you will love this song! Early in the band’s career, they referred to themselves as the “sound of the future.” The re-emergence of “Emerge” nearly twenty years later is proving they were right. Discover Fischerspooner all over again. See the video here!
